Back to Procedure List PageGynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek word for "woman like breast." Although its not often talked about, this condition affects an estimated 40% of men. It can affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with this condition, there is no known cause. In many cases, this procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.

Surgery may be discouraged for obese men who have not first tried to correct the problem with diet and exercise. Also, individuals who drink alcohol in excess or smoke marijuana are usually not candidates. These drugs, as well as anabolic steroids may cause gynecomastia.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about one hour. If excess glandular tissue is the cause, it will be excised or cut out with a scalpel. The excision may be performed in conjunction with liposuction. The incision is made in an inconspicuous area, either on the edge of the areola or in the underarm area. A drain may be placed to draw off excess fluids. Once closed, the incisions are covered with a dressing.

Whether you have had excisions with a scalpel or liposuction, you will feel some discomfort for a few days-pain medicine is provided for your relief. You will be swollen and bruised for a week or two, and you may be instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment. Although the worst of you swelling will go down in a few weeks, it may be three months or more before the final results of your surgery are apparent. You should avoid exposing the scars to the sun for at least six months. You should stay away from any sport or job that risk a blow to the chest for at least four weeks.
