LiposuctionLiposuction is performed to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. Dr. Carli uses the tumescent technique for liposuction, which means that he injects a saline solution into the area prior to the liposuction. The advantage of this technique is to expand the fat pockets to firm up the fat for easier removal, to provide some anesthetic in the saline solution for more pain relief post-operatively and also to help balance the amount suctioned out to facilitate the body in reaching equilibrium.
The surgery itself can run anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the number of areas done. If you want to do several areas, Dr. Carli may recommend that it be divided between 2 surgeries. After surgery, a compression garment is placed on the area; the compression will help with skin retraction. This garment will stay on day and night for 3 weeks after which you may only need to wear it 9 to 12 hours a day.
Since the small incisions used for liposuction are left open a small to large amount of drainage is to be expected. Dressings are applied under your garment over the incisions and these can be changed as often as needed when you arrive home. You will drain for approximately 12 to 24 hours post surgery.
After surgery, you will remain in recovery for 1 to 2 hours and then go home. Pre operative lab work and possibly and an EKG and chest x-ray are performed, these tests are included in the price of liposuction. Approximately 1 week after surgery, massage therapy is started which helps the skin retract and smooth out. You will be given pain pills, as well as antibiotics, sleeping pills and nausea medication for your recovery at home.
Does the fat return after it is taken out?
It can but usually does not. But one must still maintain a sensible diet and exercise plan.
When can I return to my normal activities?
You may begin most of your normal activities in about 1 to 2 weeks. You must be patient with your healing process, although you will see a noticeable difference after surgery, bruising and swelling will be present to some extent for up to 3 months.
